-Portuguese reggae music also highlighted in dis week’s ZonaReGGae wid tunes from Freddy Locks, Bandoo Roots, Terrakota…alongside wid the feature to new releases:
The Ratazanas, marking their place in Portugal reggae music history, wid their debut release Ouh La La!!

Early Reggae, Skinhead reggae, Jamaican & Northern Soul…Not to so often heard about styles (over here at least…), that Portuguese The Ratazanas, heartily introduce and recreate in Ouh La La!!

Directly from Oeira’s city sewers to legendary German label Grover Records catalog, The Ratazanas are already the biggest revelation , in Portuguese Jamaican sounds revival scene!
Created back in 2005, after a couple of dirty benefits in band contests, and indecorous performances in ska Portuguese events; 2007 open the doors for their 1st international cap, playing alongside The Aggrolites in Granada festival “All Reggae to the People”.
From there, to having the honor to support Susan Cadogan in the well known Girona Rude Cat Festival in 2009, they had the time to trip over at Belgium, and record the debut Ouh La La!!, invited by the producer Nico Leonard, member of the finest ska revival/early reggae crews, like Moon Invaders or The Caroloregians!

The 100% analogue recording style in Ouh La La!!, provides that original dirty sounds touch, characteristic from the end of the 60Ts Jamaican reggae…It wasn’t rocksteady no longer, but still not quite the popular roots rasta reggae, it was early reggae!! And The Ratz reinvent it over the 15 tune of finest revival we find in Ouh La La!!; uncompromised between instrumentals full wid terrifying organ lines, dirty basslines and a healthy, big amount of cheerfulness, irony and lyrical nonsense!
Genial insanities like Lee Deep Fry Perry’s Specter; WC Groove; 911 Reggae Emergency; King Kong; Tenny Weeny, String Bikini (go and try found out about the original inspiration for dis one!), or the Hidden track, take us in a journey to another musical reality, best described as Rudies Taking Over…again!

A Kind of middle term sandwiched between generations like The Upsetters and The Slackers, The Ratazanas have it all to, soon, conquer the true rudies spots like Spain, UK or Germany, wid a planned full Europe tour backing up Susan Cadogan.
In the meanwhile, believe in Grover Records bet (they hardly get it wrong!), and check dis unique and original Rat Attack, Ouh La La!! For real!
Smell dem better, soon come, in a sewer near you or @

Check us back next week, where the Roots, Dub & Revival will go on, wid a full new and soon come release session!
Hayah Love!
