Plenty more brand new stuff playing dis week, but the greatest of them takes the form of weekly new releases highlight; finally:) featuring Groundation’s new album – Here I am!

More than just a Modern Roots Reggae group, Groundation is today, a reference all over the world, standing for creativity in dis music style.

After 10 years of constant innovation and development, Groundation released last June, their 6^th original album, Here I am, a genuine Ode to humanity’s presence and importance as a whole, at the beginning of dis troubled century.

Rather than repeating the formula (or one of the many!) that the group created in any one of the previous albums, Here I Am breathes to a new sound, and demonstrates a new phase of group life, this time creating a genuine collective sound, where, just like in their extraordinary live performances, where each element have, naturally, their own space, to give their best and unique contribution!

The Group's core trio Harrison Stafford, Ryan Newman and Marcus Urani, are now accompanied by new elements: David Chachere (trumpet), Kelsey Howard (trombone), Dr. Jason Robinson (saxophone), Mingo Lewis Jr. (Congas), and Tekanawa 'Rufus' Haereiti on drums, perhaps the greatest highlight in dis 'new' line up, bringing a natural jazzy Groove into the riddim section.

Novelties don´t stop here, and we can now listen to female voices, Kim Pommel and Stephanie Wallace, leaving their unique position as backing vocals, and stepping forward in tunes like the title track Here I am, So Blind or Not so Simple.

Jamaican reggae legends like percussionist Sticky Thompson, sweet voiced Pablo Moses, and The Congos original trio, are Here I Am special guest stars; once again matching in perfection, Harrison Stafford’s intriguing voice, that even comes up just as backup on tunes like Time Come, where The Congos show us why they are, probably, the best Jamaican vocal trio of all time!

Musically, the rhythmic construction in Here I am is superb, keeping the classic Roots Reggae base that always passionate the group; but also bringing a obvious return to their jazz origins, marked by the presence of Groundation’s first-ever instrumental theme in a album, Walk Upright, or by the jammin’ style of Not so Simple!

Being obviously an album for Groundation’s fanatic (like any other from the group will certainly be!), Here I am is not for purists, somewhat showing an attempt to break musical barriers, and both, open the musical horizons of the Jamaican music purist, as well the ones to everyone else!

And if the music is unique by its elaboration, Here I Am and Groundation stand out once again, by the exquisite lyrical originality.

Without falling into clichés and still straight to the point, Harrison Stafford lyrics , are here simultaneous given to: the System, which seems to want to squeeze anything it can until the inevitable end of its sovereignty; and every one of us, calling for hope, and urgency of a true and real Union and community amongst all of us……Run the Plan, By All Means, Blues Away or You Can Profit, are some of the brightest, truthful and emotive Groundation lyrics ever!

Closing the set, simplicity of the complex well present in the tune Golan to Galilee, over a unique cry out for union, where all the voices get together to chant:

‘From Golan to Galilee/Onto Jerusalem
that´s what I want to see/ All Love and unity
stretching through creation/As far as the Eye can see

I Rasta, I Rasta, I Rasta, I Rasta’

If for many, Here I Am, is not Groundation’s best release ever, we can certainly say that it´s till now, the groups best musical momentum, originality above everything, and in many instants, capable of bringing all the strength and creativity that the group displays live on stage!

The journey follows wid their alert Tours around the world; and great news for the year 2010; with the announcement of another dubwise chapter from Dub Wars series!

And the release of Holding on to Jah, one of the most awaited documentaries about Jamaican music history, co-produced by Harrison Stafford!

Basque label, Brixton Records, keeps on their awesome efforts to bring back, and promote, the best being done in the world of Revival Jamaican Ska music! Another big chapter coming on the way, wid the 4^th album release, from virtuous saxophonist David Hillyard alongside The Rocksteady 7.

In the professional circuit for more than 20 years, David Hillyard is one of the most influent and respected presences in north-american Ska scene, virtually belonging to anyone worth of mention from Hepcat, Stubborn All-Stars, Skinner Box, Rancid to, off course, the worldwide renowned The Slackers.

Combining the Jamaican roots, wid Jazz, African and Latin influences is one of his biggest trademarks, that made him a innovator of is own, especially in the project along with The Rocksteady 7.

Their new album, Get Back Up!, is an intense instrumental journey, where Jazz music themes tradition and improvise mix up, providing the best display of Jamaican Jazz we have heard in years!

Hillyard’s expertise playing Saxophone (Tenor, Soprano and Baritone), leads Get Back Up! new original 11 themes, bringing back to mind Jamaican originators Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook or north-american favorites John Coltrane or Pharaoh Saunders.

Over such a constant tripping, he could not ride alone, and The Rocksteady 7 are superb company in the way they aren’t just any backup band. Always shifting but always presenting the best from NY city musicians, this guys have a blessed understanding off Jamaican music, and sometimes we can surely state they sound like the best thing second to the everlasting Skatalites!

Their ska-jazz mastering is presented all over tunes like, Change of Plans, Sunny, Soul Thing for Ray or Death Ride.

Bingi Drum tradition is remembered and enhanced over tunes like RNA; Ca´Purange; Rocksteady fashion seems well alive over 7 years of Plenty and Get Back Up!; and original roots music is stronger than ever in the marvelous Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am.

One vocal tune appears in this new release, ‘Esta Tarde’, a kind of lover rock sound, where Jamaican veteran percussionist Larry McDonald sings in a kind of Brazilian-Spanish-Portuguese mix, very pleasing to be heard over this side of the ocean;)

Difficult to say if Get Back Up! is their best achievement to date (once previous releases: Playtime, United Front and Way Out East are all equally excellent!), but one thing is sure, if you like true and original music, this project will never disappoint you, on the contrary, each new release always surprises and brings something new into Ska-Jazz revival!

Improvise and you will win, this is the way from David Hillyard and The Rocksteady 7…

A musical art created by Muhammad Abdullah Hamzah a.k.a. Celt Islam, English convert to Islam, more specifically to it's the mystic and inner dimension, Sufism.

Sufi mysticism, traditional Asian and Arabic musicality, together wid powerful and dance driven bass lines, make Celt Islam music something of unique, derived from the sub-genre he introduced, the Sufi-Dub!

Almost a loner, on the dissemination of this style, his work is best known in alternative circuits, mainly through his collaborations wid British collectives ‘Nine Invisibles’ and ‘Analogue Fakir’.

The adaptation and understanding of various styles and genres into his own Sufi-Dub, is clearly audible all over dis debut album, with UK Dub and Electro Dub present all over, in fine style wid the tunes Halaqa, Resonate, Fakir, Mevlana or Revolution Inside me, one of the tune in collaboration, which presents a very interesting Polish band, Masala.

This Dervish journey takes us to the East and Middle East, with the enigmatic Tablas trance providing the expedition, in a constant Universal Groove fusion, where the messengers arise also in tunes like, Warrior featuring Bongo Chilli; and Dan Man (Iration Steppas) wid Justice, a good example of Reggae world's presence in Celt Islam’s very own universe.

Worth of mention are the World Beat tune, Uprising, Dubstep approaches Haq Ui Yakin and Gaza; or the 3 distinct Drum’n’Bass trends presented in Bloodstain (alongside Kenzie), Illumination (featuring Adbalwahid Mursaleen) and Accelerator (wid vocals from D.Bo General), definitely the genre where Celt Islam will surprise many!

If conceptually Celt Islam work is original and in itself practically unique, Dervish (a Sufi seeker) demonstrates a search for something new, in terms of merging electronic wid instrumental, something superbly achieved with a perfect balance between musical mysticism and dance beats.

A meditative journey, that will certainly expand the horizons of electronic subsequently creations!

For I, it’s amazing that dis has been lasting for so long, and thanks & praises go always to each and every one of the sound supporters and providers, and all the listening crew! In the original vinil edition, Sound Sysytem International Dub LP presents 10 rockin oldschool tunes from Clancy Eccles rocksteady and early reggae days, wid the music providers The Dynamites, seeing their riddims tottaly re-worked by King Tubby, giving his own early steps into dubwise style!

The CD version brings out 5 bonus tracks, that also stand for the origins of Dub music in Kingston Soundsystems, wid highlights going also to the featuring from King Stitt, the producer himself Clancy Eccles and Andy Capp!

Released last 19^th September, this is without no doubt a outta of dis world reissue from Pressure Sounds crew, presenting the beginnings of King Tubby innovative mix, future inspiration for the jamaican phenomenon that was (and is!) Dub music!

The International Farmer health condition little or nothing improved, since the stroke he suffered in 2004, taking him away from the music scene, preventing Peter from doing what he loves the most, to sing!

Facing financial difficulties to keep on paying for the treatments and medical bills, Springline Jamaica and its front man Paul ‘Gibsy’ Gibbs, gave birth to the More Univershall project, over which all the artists are giving their sales royalties to support Peter Broggs.

Officially release past 21^st, More Univershall is a creative set of new music, with Roots Reggae and Dub as its main focus, presenting lots of names from the Worldwide Underground scene!

Independent devoted and established names like Dub Creator (featuring Peter Broggs himself!), Telford Nelson, Pama International, Nick Manasseh, Reggae Bubblers or Yabass, get together wid rising artists like Steve Steppa, The Manor,Willie Steen, Jah Billa, Squidly Cole, Albusark Studio, Hassle or Portuguese Ras Bruno, that not just worked as a producer on the tunes, but also has his joyful tune ‘Bring I Roots’, featuring as the album presentation ‘single’!

Besides the Roots and Dub music, some artists bring along other styles to More Univershall, wid some Hip-Hop, Drum’n’Bass or dancehall derivations, always wid the original touch that marks what today its being done in the world of underground Reggae and indie music!

Released last 21st August for global appreciation, at French net label, Fresh Poulp Records, Spiritual Evolution takes us on a ride from Japan to Mexico, Cyprus to Spain or Netherland to Micronesia!

Gathering 21 producers and artists from All over the World, Bandulu Dub presents a journey where Dub, World and electronic music are one and the same!

Coming from north Portugal region, Minho, Bandulu Dub is one of the most active and recognized Portuguese Dubmasters. In spite of the Portuguese nationality and headquarters, it’s been quite some time since the project brain, Bruno Araújo, outsized Bandulu Dub to a global family, featuring a big amount of international cooperation’s in varied fields: musical, vocal, production, mixing or engineering!

After a couple of online author releases, wid emphasizes to 2007 Ganja Poetry, he joined forces wid famous net-label Fresh Poulp Records. Following dis years featuring at Dub Tentacles Vol.1 compilation, he returns now in full strength, presenting the new album Spiritual Evolution!

Yet another chapter in the short Portuguese Dub history, but promising to become a world reference landmark, to what comes out of our heavy basslines underground culture.

A kind of Planet Dub expedition is Spiritual Evolution main focus, giving us the chance to discover some new and interesting artists and projects, coming from the underground scene blooming in the various continents.

The Roots and Dub reggae music presented here, puzzle’s us between the organic and electronic, wid several traditional Dubwise action over the tracks: Brilla El Sol, Moringa or the hypnotic East Dub.

Heavy trends like Steppers and Electro-Dub, appear in the form of 3 of the best tunes in the album: Planeta Terra, wid Portuguese language represented by Brazilian singer Dacal; Roots mi Tourist, featuring 2 top acts Roots Ista Posse (France) and Obed Brinkman (Netherlands); and Mechanisms and Processes, a frenzy electro-dub tune, balanced wid Japanese Takanishi Tomoyasu beautiful melodica arrangements.

Tracks like Long Hair Man, Changes or En La Piel, stand out a more instrumental roots reggae sound, and although the World Music (or Beat) is very characteristic all over the album (mainly influenced by the origin of the collaborations), the intro track Ayurvera, and the title track Spiritual Evolution, are two pleasant examples of Nature and (H)Earth sounds in Bandulu’s dub.

-Weekly feature to new albums presents an absolute debut at ZonareGGae, the 3^rd and latest work from London multicultural collective, The Soothsayers!

Released past April on their own Red Earth Records, ‘One More Reason’ presents the meeting between The Soothsayers and The Red Earth Collective.

Just like the seer storyteller wid futurist visions (A Soothsayer), the Soothsayers reinvent and foresee a fusion of style connected to the roots, for almost a decade now, of passionate live shows.

Coming from South London, Brixton, and based in a intercommunication and culture collision viewpoint, it’s already been a while since these thrilling group of musicians, broke the conventional barriers of the often called Word Music, through their organic fusion of Nu Afro Beat, Urban Jazz, Funk and Dub Reggae.

Rebuilding their vision has been a constant work for the Soothsayers, since the Afro Beat, Jazzy Funk from debut release, Lost City, going to Soul, Hip-Hop and Reggae in Tangled Roots, until the latest One More Reason, where Dub music finds a true meaning alongside their usual strong African elements.

In dis musical venture, particularly a creation of Idris Rahman (sax/vocals) and Robin Hopcraft (trumpet/vocals), accompanied by Phil Dawson (guitar), Kodjovi Kush (bass) and Patrick Illingworth (drums), innumerous guests and companions join in, many of those regular presences over the, already mythic, Red Earth Collective Sessions, in Brixton’s musicians & music lovers gathering spot, Effra.

Serving as a live starting creation point, for the musical display presented in the new album, those sessions also inspired the title One More Reason is presenting: Soothsayers meet the Red Earth Collective.

The group main origins and influences are well present here, with an emphasis over the tunes: Music, Slow Down or the experimental Mama Said, where a sort of spoken words from Bob Skeng, join hands wid Gnawa influences from Djina Jones.

As usual in fusion collectives, Soothsayers quality and musical wisdom are extraordinary, and over an album where the incursion into reggae music is pointed out, the British tradition is obviously there. Still, we can find some master pieces in roots revival approach in the tunes, We Better Learn and River Effra, where the bassline grooves and the abundant and creative horn arrangements (definitely the common ground for Soothsayers musical basis) do not deceive, Soothsayers are also well rooted in the Jamaican tradition!

So, it’s not surprising to check the 3 special guest stars, wid Linval Thompson, afro-dub tune History, Michael Prophet hearthfull Tears of Sorrow, and Johnny Clarke’s double featuring, Bad Boys (anticipated in single release in 2008) and Your Love. Not necessarily being Roots or Dub themes (altough the dub elements are all over the album!), dis tunes are above all, four musical efforts driven and oriented toward dis 3 jamaican music legends, where they give the most and best of their gifted vocals and lyrical consciousness!

Guest vocals go on, wid Mellow Baku amazing voice, a little bit all over the album in backing vocal appearance, and highlighted in Hold On, and over the uplifting combination, Irie, together wid Michie One.

Dub in its pure essence, rounds up One More Reason, wid yet 2 guest stars; We Must Return to Dub, a Mad Professor remix for Tangled Roots album tune We Must Return; and a UK Style version from Nick Manasseh for Michael Prophet’s song, Tears in Dub.

Wid a name fitting in perfection the musical beliefs they send out, the Soothsayers not only bring the best Dub Reggae UK tradition incorporated in African music roots (Adrian Sherwood, Jah Wooble or Massive Attack influences are a must here for sure!), as also raise awareness wid a continuous political and conscious lyrical work.

Mainly, they anticipate in one hand, a future where musical fusion has no boundaries, and on another one, a future where leaders of the World and Mankind itself, urge to find their own limits…

One More Reason, for us is the 3^rd and now, best reason, to definitely not miss dis Soothsayers!

-Featuring on the weekly highlight, from the mother label, Universal Egg, and wid schedule release for next week (7^th September), we feature one of the most awaited Remix albums of dis year, Zion Train Live as One Remixed!

When it was released in September 2007, the ninth Zion Train album ‘Live as One’, marked the return from the Dub Dance style pioneers, to studio since 2002. Featuring a series of high-level vocalists (Earl 16,Tippa Irie, Dubdadda, YT, amongst others), and a well crafted mixed, roots revival – Heavy Dub, production, Live as One was one the most praised 2007 releases, culminating with the choice for Best Dub album at the Jamaican Grammys, Reggae Academy Awards! (featuring also as the only European presence in the final Choices, and probably the only non-mainstream followers one…)

Since then a soundsystem favorite amid the underground culture, Live as One remixed was in the following months, anticipated wid 2 EP releases that foretold one of the most original released ever in the Remix philosophy!

Featuring 15 ‘remixers’ (many were certainly left out from the final edition!), Zion Train guru, Neil Perch presents in Live as One Remixed, 7 tracks from the Live as One release, wid some of those featuring several remix versions.

One of the aspects that will surely make this the elected Remix album for soundsystem crews, is the variety of styles presented: wid Dubs and Steps from Alambic Conspiracy (Italy), Dub Creator (Holland), Rob Smith (UK) or Digital Dubs (Brazil); going forward to UK Dub/Steppers approaches from Vibronics (UK), Brain Damage (France), RDK Soundsystem (Croatia), Weeding Dub (France), Professor Skank (Greece), into modern Dubstep from De Niro (Italy) or Dubsync (Italy).

Heavy soundsystem rotation classics, Boxes and Amps & Baby Father, are the ones that deserve bigger highlight, given the several remixes included, being also the starting point towards the unique originality of this work, that brings out a Remix (at least!) for everyone’s taste!

REC ON Mixtape Selections Vol.1! Heavy Roots Dub,Steppers & Electro Dub

Greetings! Another week off at ZonaReGGae radiosessions. RUA FM keeps on the excellent work in doing coverage and live broadcast of alternative music festival, and dis time we will be at MED Festival 6th edition. One of the fast growing World Music Festival in Portugal, happening right here in 'our' Algarve region, from 24th to 28th June, in Loulé city. Great chances to listen live in our online radio transmission (if everything goes as planned) to Horace Andy & Dub Asante band, on the 25th, at midnight, thirty minutes (GMT). Replacing the usual radio session broadcast edition, I present dis week the first REC ONE Mixtape! After so many years doing dub and riddim mixes to present pon di radioshow, I figured it was about time, to just HIT the REC button on my old mini-disc, and record a live session. Dis one is a setlist recovered from a live selection I had a couple of days ago. It was a nice party, but between the sound engineer turning my boot sound down, and my mini-disc crashing during the session, it turned out kind of frustrating… So, a couple of days after, I decided to hit my ‘studio’ room, and record it:) Dis one was made wid two Pionner CD-J 100, a Reloop mixer, and sound fx coming out of a old school pad sample box. No edit, no intro and no outro…just strictly live studio mix:) One and a half hour of pure Heavy Dub Roots; Steppers and Electro Dub! Hope ya enjoy! One of the most charismatic voices in Jamaican music, Cornell Campbell belongs to Studio One Soul generation, where he started out very early wid 11 years old, recording tunes like Under the Old Oak Tree or Old King Cole for Coxsone Dood. After some solo and duet experiences alongside Alan Martin, during the sixties, Cornell Campbell enhanced his vocal gifts together wid The Uniques and legendary Slim Smith opening the way to his own vocal group The Eternals, which recorded one of the everlasting Studio One classics, Queen of the Minstrels. The Seventies point out the way, followed by many of the Studio One greater artists, towards Bunny Striker Lee, that saw in Campbell voice a perfect replacement for Slim Smith, after his tragic death in 1973. Together wid groundbreaking Bunny Lee production skills and The Aggrovators rockers style, Cornell Campbell quickly become of the most fascinating falsettos in reggae music. Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm, Natural fact, The Lion of Judah, or the famous Gorgon series, still stand today as hits from Cornell Campbell best moments, by that time clearly influenced already by roots reggae rastafari livity. The Gorgon Dubwise, gathers 16 dub versions, many from originals, others from cover versions, from the partnership wid Bunny Lee. In spite of Cornell Campbell being a usual presence over Jamaican history innumerous dub version albums, The Gorgon Dubwise as the charisma of a compilation put together to reunite some of his best and rare dub style moments, over the original Flyers rockers style, Bunny Lee trademark production! Judah Dub, 100 Pound of Dub, Pity Dub ou Educate Them in Dub are all extraordinary versions presented here, as also rarities as Just a Moment or General Dub, the rarest version from the Gorgon riddim! A blessed collection that shows the crucial significance of the vocal track, to turn a dub cut in a magic moment, something that Cornell Campbell presence allows in a unique way! Like many early reggae and roots legends, the 80Ts announced an anticipated departure from recording business, and nowadays appearances from Cornell Campbell are somehow rare. Nevertheless, dis new The Gorgon Dubwise, shows us why, for so long, Campbell was The Ruler of dis Ya Dance! -The roots follow strong in the session wid recoveries for Leroy Brown, King Tubby, Mikey Ras Starr, Rod Taylor, or one of our own favorite cult presences in Jamaican scene, Little Roy, blessing the airwaves wid the new single Caution’ for Mad Professor! -There is also time for the Portuguese reggae scene, wid Prince Wadada, One Love Family or Freddy Locks & The Groove Missions, the last ones wid 2 new tunes played LIVE over RUA FM stage, in the past weeks Annual Academic Festival! Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and thrilling voices from Jamaica, Johnny Clarke always surprised wid his vocal styles versatility, over his famous covers, lover rock tunes or, the dancehall favorites, Dread Rockers 'Flyers Rhythms'. His first works for producers like Clancy Eccles, Rupie Edwards or Glen Brown, made Clarke one the rising local starts, considered by many as the first ever true singer in the dancehall scene, dominated by deejays. In spite being well known in jamaican stages and soundsystem sessions, Johnny Clarke was to become a island top favorite, when he hooked up wid Bunny Striker Lee, precisely by the most creative moment from the originator of Flying Cymbal style. When the classic tune None Shall Escape the Judgment, was transfered to King Tubby studio, missing the original vocal track from Earl Zero, Johnny Clarke, whom had recorded backing vocals for the tune, went into studio to record the main vocals, of a theme that was soon to become one the biggest soundsystem hits from the seventies! From the geographic closeness and constant search for innovation, the United States of America, feature in the forefront of dis cooperation’s, and the most recent one is being taken by Higher Bound Productions! Founded by producer/musican/singer Ryan 'Ishence' Williard in 2000, Higher Bound works in a mission to spread the conscious music, awakening a positive chance in the current and future world. The so called Progressive music is nowadays, a wave that reaches all and any musical genre. Understood as a music style, progressive reveals a creative willingness to introduce new, or even strange, elements, to the musical genre in question. Northern Europe, Asia or the USA, are some of the places were progressive style reaches bigger proportions, and its in the last one, dat we find of the most committed reggae bands, to breach pre-concepts associated wid the style, Boston collective, John Brown´s Body. Created around 1995, and 'baptized' in honor to American slave abolitionist, John Brown (1800-1859), JBB were, during the 2nd half of the 90Ts, often acclaimed as one the best Roots Reggae USA experiences, along 'side project' 10ft Ganja Plant. After 3 albums, (All Time['96] , Among Them ['99], This Day [2000]), the latest years has shown lots of changes and experimentalism incursions, mainly in 2005 release, Pressure Points, the last to feature long time vocalist Kevin Kinsella. Now, led by Elliot Martin, backup vocals, since JBB 2nd release ,10 years ago, 2008 brought new life to JBB, wid the release of the latest 'Amplify'. Ever since, the competitive Kingston scene, originated and motivated various clashes, between deejays and toasters, and the best known, levelheaded and profitable of all, happened Once Upon a Time at King Tubby´s, Waterhouse Studio. More precisely over the 1974-75 years, wid I-Roy and Prince Jazzbo, as main actors occurred the classic series of 7inches, ‘Straight to the Head’, goaded by Bunny Striker Lee, producer of all, but one, of the tracks, dat revealed a funny trade of ‘insults’, among the two deejays, who were in reality, and kept on being, great friends! Generating exchanges of influences and complicities, guest stars,Johnny Clarke, Derrick Morgan, Dirty Harry or Prince Fari, came into the studio, and also entered the confrontation, all recorded and mixed at King Tubby’s, wid exception for “Padlock” which I Roy recorded at Channel One. Once Upon a Time at King Tubby’s, is the most recent history works, from british label, Pressure Sounds, and gathers for a 1st time, all the chapters from dis battle, that set the Jamaican record scene alight in the mid seventies! Besides the inspired and creative versions, through which I Roy and Prince Jazzbo, annoyed and measured up each other, the musical background from The Aggrovators and The Revolutionaires, make dis a enormous roots reggae display, inspired by the early days vibe and musical touch, wid King Tubby’s mixing genius, certifying the musical glow here compiled! Still today, many argue and question, who really came out as winner from this 7inch contest, and in reality, the only conclusion leads to the instigator of it all! New age riddims, line up a nice up the dance selection, wid new spins to:Kingfish Riddim; Dubwise Riddim;; Prosper Riddim, Adversity Riddim, Zurie Riddim or Alton Rock Riddim!...dis last one, represented by the word, sound & power from Fantan Mojah, featured wid a couple more tracks, antecipating Fantan Mojah 1st ever visit to Portugal, next Friday, in Lisbon city! Dis week, we welcomed live in studio, a local friendly tribe, BANDOO D'JAH. A steady and growing force in Portugal reggae scene, dis Brazilian flavoured, Roots,Rock & Dancehall Reggae group, are preparing their 2nd Release, Planeta Água [Planet Water], and came to bless our broadcast, wid 4 new unreleased tracks! The interview got pretty interesting, even dat dis portuguese /brazilian chattin' wont really get your outernational, non-portuguese speaking crews :P, take a 'look' at the live jam they provided, around minute '92. Or at least listen, as we feature another pearl from jamaican roots music foundations, the compilation “Get Together: Original Recordings” from veteran Keith Poppin! Keith Smith grew up in Jamaican Westmoreland city, surrounded by soon to be, reggae legends, like Lee Perry, Peter Tosh or Ronnie Davis. Jimmy London, and his group The Inspirations were also a major influence, and Keith sometimes rehearsed wid them. The desire to become a reggae star, led him to Kingston, were around 1968, the duet The Robins, and the group Rocking Horse were formed. Whether alongside dis two formations, or as a solo singer, Keith Poppin revealed himself as one the greatest voices from the early reggae scene, and during the seventies, plenty of Jamaican and United Kingdom, number 1 hits were released to confirm it! The 1st of those, “Same Thing for Breakfast”, recorded wid Lloyd Parks in 1973, was a UK nº1, and sold around 50,000 copies! Soon followed blessed cooperations wid some of the best from the emerging roots scene, like Sly & Robbie, Aston Barret, Glen Brown, Lloyd Campbell or Phil Pratt. In 1980, Keith Poppin was surely one of the best voices, and live acts in the island, and he turned out to become the first singer to get a release in Peter Tosh Intel-Diplo label. The changes in the music towards dancehall style, and Peter Tosh death, seem to be a crucial point for Poppin's disappearance from the recording studios, during the 80Ts and 90Ts, although he strongly remained active in the live acts, and promoting venues for names groundbreaking names like Barrington Levy, Tony Rebel ou Mad Cobra. Living in the States since the 90Ts, Keith Poppin, retuned to the albuns, wid the 2002 self-release, Journey's, featuring a friendly allstar crew like Dean Fraser, Sly & Robbie, The Tamlins, Glen Adams or Jimmy London! A release that both reinvigorated his career as Keith himself, since that time, more than ever, committed to regain a deserved place as one of reggae music prophets. Already working in a new release, Keith Poppin decided, in 2007, to remember and make available, the biggest tunes from the beginning, compiling those in the “Get Together:Original Recordings” released by his own KP Recordings. A fascinating compile work, featuring Keith Poppin´s biggest tunes recorded between 1970-79, Get Together is a surprising release, both because of the production quality it presents, and mainly because of the vocal 'A' class from dis, somehow, forgotten veteran from the early reggae times. Preseting top studio sessions at Studio One, Randy’s, Harry J or Channel One, and musicians like Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitto, Leroy ‘Hoursemouth’ Wallace, Sly & Robbie, Earl Chinna Smith or Lloyd Parks, make dis compilation a precious piece of reggae music history! A series of rare, never released on CD, singles were here included by Keith Poppin, all over the 17 tunes from this Original Recordings. (http://www.fotolog.com/54_46carquistao) - Weekly highlight to new releases, presents another great unreleased, classic roots/rockers instrumental set from the seventies: Tappa Zukie - Horns UP 'Dubbing with Horns' David Sinclair, better known as Tappa Zukie, is one of the great Kingston artists, that intelligently split is work, between his rough & tuff deejay versions and productions to emmerging talents. A short passage in London during 1973, proved to be a life time opportunity, when Bunny Lee arranged him an opening act for U-Roy, in the same day he arrived at the British capital, opening the door for the recording of debut single "Jump & Twist". Shortly after, and back in Jamaica, Tappa Zukie started out a series of works alongside Bunny Lee and Jo Jo Hookin, and later on, opened his recording studio, producing names like Junior Ross & The Spears, Prince Alla and Horace Andy! Due to hit the stores next March, this new release from Jamaican Recordings, is centered in a series of instrumental versions, produced and arranged by Tappa Zukie, around that time, when riddim was King! Dancehall oriented releases, demanded that drum and bass, where the predominant features in the tunes, often leaving little space, or none, for the other intruments recorded. Horns masters Vin Gordon, Deadly ‘Headley’ or Tommy McCook, were usual to find at Tappa Zukie recording sessions, and so, he decided to get a break from the usual riddim style, using all theirs musical excellency, and arrange a set of favorite classics, where the horn sections got the chance to shine all over the riddim! Everlasting classics like “Slave Master”, Take 5”, “Real Rock”, “Water Pump”, “Raggamuffin”…are included in this extraordinary compile of roots/rockers oriented pure instrumentals, that back in those days, the time and place did not seem suitable for the release...Directly from the masters tapes, that time 'forgot' in Tappa Zukie archives, "Horns Up" is finnaly out!
